Michael has two sons. Michael studied law in Germany and worked for a bank. He became a member of the German Foreign Service and was stationed in Paris, Dhaka (Bangladesh), San Francisco, Los Angeles and Berlin. Michael joined his family business in insurance. He sold the company in 2018 and retired in 2022. In 2023, he worked 5 Months in Berlin for the Foreign Service at the Asia Desk specializing on matters around the Southern Chinese Sea and Pacific Islands
