Is Bipartisanship Dead?

Is Bipartisanship Dead?

Tuesday, October 14, 2025 (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

At a time of historic polarization in Washington and beyond, this timely discussion brings together leading voices from both sides of the aisle to examine whether bipartisanship is truly a relic of the past or if common ground can still be found on the most pressing issues of our day.

This program will feature experienced policymakers who have witnessed first-hand the challenges and opportunities of governing across party lines, including former Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-CA), former Congressman David Dreier (R-CA).

The event will take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM, in partnership with the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, with the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations serving as a promotional partner.

Event Recap:

On Tuesday October 14th, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council partnered with the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations for a conversation on whether bipartisanship still has a place in American politics.

Former Representatives Jane Harman and David Dreier joined moderator Jim Newton to reflect on their time in Congress and how things have changed. They talked about the rise of polarization, the role of media and redistricting, and whether there is still room for cooperation across party lines. Despite their different perspectives, both agreed that respectful dialogue is still possible and more necessary than ever.

Our sincere thanks to Jane Harman, David Dreier, and Jim Newton for their insight and candor, to our partners at UCLA, and to everyone who joined us in person and online.
